Description

Global Discovery is the fusion of Global Insight Plus and elevation data (from a legacy product called Global Profile). This rich combination of layers forms the most detailed seamless world map data set available.

Global Insight Plus provides vector reference mapping at 1:1,000,000 scale for the entire world. Coverage is provided by a manageable set of layers including places (over 820,000 locations including accented characters and alternative names), up-to-date political maps at two scales (1:1M and 1:3M), coastlines, international borders, some first level administrative borders, time zones, roads, railways, drainage features (rivers and lakes), airports (including IATA code) and ports (including UN/LOCODE).

The additional elevation layers provide five minute raster data provides small scale mapping for abstract views and features coloured imagery for both land elevations and sea bathymetry. Thirty second raster provides higher resolution mapping for land areas. Vector mapping includes land and sea floor contours plus a mountain gazetteer. ESRI ArcView users may require an additional software module to support the raster data files (see Data Formats section below).

Important note for ESRI users: The TIFF raster images in Global Discovery use a special compression method known as LZW. In order to support this method, ArcView 3.x users require an extra DLL file called AVOPT.DLL and ArcGIS v8.x to v9.0 users require the TIFF/LZW extension. Since the Unisys patent on LZW has now expired worldwide, these extensions are freely available from ESRI. ArcGIS v9.1 and above need no additional support.

Global Discovery may be deployed in an Internet / Intranet web environment or used in a central server based capacity for an annual fee of three times single user list price. If the use of the product includes service resale (ASP models, etc.), the annual fee is five times the single user list price. Prices include updates for one year. For Intranet or server based applications where the number of users is limited, the multi-user licence pricing above (one payment, perpetual licence) can be used.
