Description

Global Proxima is a web-based place locator technology incorporating phonetic name matching and Where's the Nearest...? proximity analysis. Powered by the extensive place name gazetteer of Global Insight, Proxima is ideal for web designers wishing to present the nearest service locations relative to a given place name (typically the visitors home or temporary location). Potential applications include hotel finders, service centre locators and global assistance networks.

The underlying Global Insight gazetteer provide place name spellings in local, conventional, English and foreign name variants (including French, German, Italian, Spanish, Dutch and Portuguese). Global Proxima can be dynamically configured to favour searches for a particular language if this information about the visitor is known. Global Insight has the only gazetteer based on an up-to-date political map of the world. The database is maintained and released quarterly, with the Global Proxima licence cost covering all updates and upgrades for each licensed year.

Global Proxima uses a hybrid phonetic name matching algorithm which has been fine-tuned to the nature of geographic place names and is quite resilient to multi-lingual pronunciation. It is far superior to basic and limited "Soundex" algorithms used by other product featuring phonetic name searches.

Global Proxima searches may be refined by the selection of a country (or political entity as recognised by ISO 3166 and US Federal Information Processing Standards). A Deep Search option is also available which has a slightly longer database query time but generally yields more search results.

The Where's the Nearest...? (WTN) component is compatible with any location database which has a Proxima compatible table structure, including latitude/longitude coordinate fields. WTN works on direct distances with a routed distance version in development for future release. Search results are pre-sorted in ascending distance order and can be presented in any format required.

Global Proxima is available as a Microsoft Jet (Access format) location database with a ASP/VBScript software implementation for Microsoft IIS (and compatible) based web servers. The database system can utilise any system where a robust ODBC driver is available. Proxima has been successfully tested with Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, mySQL and Microsoft Jet (Access) databases. The VBScript application provided can easily be ported to other languages and environments. Further Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) in Java and C++ are in development for future release.
